What links both is that they got lots of stage time doing other things beside lead roles in opera and both ended up singing leads around the world for over 30 years. There is no rush. Just keep on singing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17139505.post-1142909278052384472006-03-20T21:47:00.000-05:002006-03-20T21:47:00.000-05:00Regarding the development of young basses, it is w...Regarding the development of young basses, it is worth noting the meteoric rise of Robert Gleadow and Robert Pomakov, two very fine young Canadian basses who were both well-developed enough vocally and artistically to be launched upon international careers in their early twenties.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17139505.post-1142872269957892172006-03-20T11:31:00.000-05:002006-03-20T11:31:00.000-05:00Can I just make a comment about the age/later-matu...Can I just make a comment about the age/later-maturing voice thing?

Aside from the eternal "Why are men grumbling about OPPORTUNITIES - try being a soprano!" kvetch, I would like to point out that some of the points made ALSO apply to soprani with larger and/or later developing voices.

In an era of "the younger the better" and having to compete for YAP slots with 22 year old adorably cute soprani, it is helpful to note that larger voices that haven't matured enough to GET HIRED in their target fach can also follow the bass path...supporting roles!

Small roles like Ceprano (la femme!) have been very helpful to me in learning the basics of my craft, and working out my vocal/artistic bugs, while still having something on my resume. Not to mention, smaller, shorter roles are a LOT less stressful when you're at a point where you're still having to concentrate on your technique.

Unless yoone is truly an older singer whose voice is actually matured and trained, one shouldn't expect to burst out the gate singing Tosca first thing.

I think some singers may feel there is a stigma in singing supporting roles, but really! As you pointed out, if the voice is together, and if it's all that, no one is going to give two hoots if you sang The Third Maid from the Right of the Fifth Courtier at the Podunk Opera.

Just my $.25.La Cowntessahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11373178747064421890noreply@blogger.com
